Pack 438 Frequently Asked Questions

We created this section to hopefully answer some of the frequently asked questions about Pack 438 and about joining Cub Scouts.

Can I learn more about Pack 438?

Pack 438 was originally chartered in the early 1970s at Cameron Park Elementary School on St. Mary's Rd in Hillsborough.  Our Pack has a long history of excellence and several thousand K-5th graders have benefitted from becoming Cub Scouts through our program.  We have been fortunate to have a wonderful home at Hillsborough United Methodist Church for nearly 20 years.  Pack 438 proudly serves the youth of Orange, Alamance and Durham Counties and welcomes K-5th graders of all genders, races, socioeconomic backgrounds or sexual orientations.

How do I become a Scout?

Becoming a scout is as easy as attending one of our events or meetings, completing an application for membership and paying the annual charter fee.  Prospective scouts are welcome to visit events 2 times prior to joining to gauge if Cub Scouts and Pack 438 are a good fit.   Once you have joined Pack 438, you are a member in good standing as long as the annual dues are paid.  There is no need to submit an application each year.

Here are the specific details:

  • Our annual charter fee for current/returning scouts is $60.00 to be paid by December 1st of each year.  No other dues are assessed during the year.
  • New scouts joining in the fall are asked to pay prorated dues in the amount of $25.00.  This covers the BSA membership dues through the end of the current year.  The annual charter fee will then be due on December 1st as noted above.
  • Membership in the BSA for current scouts is on a yearly basis starting in January 1st.  The charter fee that is paid in December applies for the following year.  e.g. Dues of $60.00 paid on December 1, 2018 cover from January 1, 2019-December 31, 2019.
  • We do offer need-based scholarships for those unable to pay the annual charter fee.   Please ask if you have any questions!

Are There other costs?

We only charge the annual charter fee.  There are no other dues or charges for membership. Activities are at an additional cost, and those fees vary by activity or event.

Some examples:

Fall Camporee (October of each year). $40.00 per family which includes 4 meals for everyone. This is a family event for the whole family.

July Ice Skating Night. $6.50 per skater.

August Air Rocket Night. Free of charge.

Fall Trip (November of each year). Varies.  Our trip for 2018 is a Zoo Snooze overnight event at the NC Zoo.  $40 per person.

Pinewood Derby.  Free of charge.  The car kits are $5.00 each.
